Amy Coats, MA, LMFT

Amy holds a Journalism degree from Indiana University and after finding that her creativity needed a different outlet, Amy went on to earn her Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy from Indiana Wesleyan University. She specializes in working with couples and individuals (typically 30+), addressing anxiety, depression, life transitions, and self-discovery. A self-dubbed “relationship translator,” Amy especially enjoys helping clients improve communication, with a passion for premarital work and guiding couples through challenges, transitions, or reconnections. Retaining/rediscovering the connection that often brought them together is important for all couples.

Married nearly 30 years, she believes strong friendships form the foundation of lasting relationships. Amy has completed Gottman level 1 and is pursuing continuation of the Gottman couples’ method. She is also trained in Phases 1 & 2 of Brainspotting—a mind-body approach to processing trauma, stress, and life concerns. She has a special place in her heart for those who are grieving and especially those who have lost siblings, as they are often forgotten in the shuffle of loss. Additionally, she is military STAR Behavioral Health-trained and continues to learn and hone the best ways to support military-connected and public service-connected clients. Amy is also pursuing ongoing training to effectively support clients who have been touched by adoption.

Outside of work, Amy enjoys empty-nesting with her husband; spending time with her adult children; spoiling granddogs and their own Jack Russell terriers, Garry and Dennis; watching 80s & 90s movies; taking short trips; and watching live comedy. Her therapy style can be described as, “kind but direct,” blending warmth, thoughtful insight, and a willingness to ask tough questions.
